Postgraduate Scholarship in Integrable Systems

Research Areas:
Sciences & Engineering

Description:
One full-time Postgraduate Scholarship is available for suitably qualified candidates with a good honours degree in science or engineering with a major in mathematics or mathematical physics, to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Applied Mathematics. The project is to investigate and describe critical solutions of integrable and near-integrable nonlinear systems.
This is an opportunity to obtain research training in a highly regarded team collaborating on a project named "Geometric construction of critical solutions of nonlinear systems” under the direction of Professor Nalini Joshi as part of her 2012 Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship. The team is based at the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney.

Eligibility:
Applicants should have completed four years of undergraduate study and attained Honours Class 1 or equivalent with a good grounding in mathematics. Knowledge of differential equations, analysis, asymptotic analysis, special functions or geometry related to nonlinear and/or integrable systems will be highly regarded.
The University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and social inclusion. Applications from equity target groups and women are encouraged as they are underrepresented in this field.

Amount awarded:
The scholarship provides a living allowance valued at AUD 24,653 per annum (tax exempt) for qualified students undertaking a full-time degree of Doctor of Philosophy by research, who are citizens of any country. If awarded to an international student, a tuition fees scholarship will also be provided.  Each scholarship will be for three years subject to satisfactory progress, with a maximum extension of six months.  A thesis allowance and support for conference travel will also be available.
It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to approval, a later start date may be possible.

If applicable, you may also include proof of any scholarly publications or output in a relevant field of research within the last three years and examiners’ reports for any previous research theses/projects completed.

Closing date:
