[Australia] Postgraduate Scholarship in Nonlinear Systems

Application Deadline : 31 January 2013
Research Areas:
Sciences & Engineering
Type
Postgraduate Research
Description:
Two full-time Postgraduate Scholarships are available for suitably qualified candidates with a good honours degree in science or engineering with a major in mathematics or mathematical physics, to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Applied Mathematics. The project is to investigate and describe critical solutions of integrable and near-integrable nonlinear systems.  This is an opportunity to obtain research training in a highly regarded team collaborating on a project named "Geometric construction of critical solutions of nonlinear systems” under the direction of Professor Nalini Joshi as part of her 2012 Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship. The team is based at the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have completed four years of undergraduate study and attained Honours Class 1 or equivalent with a good grounding in mathematics. Knowledge of differential equations, analysis, asymptotic analysis, special functions or geometry related to nonlinear and/or integrable systems will be highly regarded. The University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and social inclusion. Applications from equity target groups and women are encouraged as they are underrepresented in this field.
Amount awarded:
Each scholarship provides a living allowance valued at AUD28,715 per annum (tax exempt) for qualified students undertaking a full-time degree of Doctor of Philosophy by research, who are citizens of any country. If awarded to an international student, a tuition fees scholarship will also be provided.  Each scholarship will be for three years subject to satisfactory progress, with a maximum extension of one year.  A thesis allowance and support for conference travel will also be available.  It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 01 July in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to approval, a later start date may be possible.
Application guide:
Further information can be obtained from Professor Nalini Joshi (email: nalini.joshi@sydney.edu.au ). Applications should be sent direct to the School Manager, Ms Caroline Dyson, School of Mathematics and Statistics (F07), The University of Sydney NSW 2006 Australia and should include a curriculum vitae, copies of academic transcript and testamur for all previous tertiary (undergraduate and postgraduate) qualifications (including an explanation of the grading schemes used for all such studies), names and contact details of two academic referees, and for international applicants (who are not citizens or permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand) a copy of the personal details page from your passport and test reports for a recognized English language test undertaken within the last two years. If applicable, you may also include proof of any scholarly publications or output in a relevant field of research within the last three years and examiners’ reports for any previous research theses/projects completed.
